New Ford Mustang set for world debut

A big slice of America is crossing the Atlantic: the Mustang is heading to UK showrooms, Auto Express can reveal. To coincide with the muscle car’s 50th anniversary in 2014, Ford will launch it across the world, and in right-hand drive for the first time.

Sources have revealed that dealers are being told to prepare for its arrival. The newcomer will sit at the top of the range alongside regular models such as theFiestaandFocusin dealerships. It will be the most European-friendly version of the coupĂ© ever – but will still be a proper Mustang, with V8s for the fastest models.

The company’s ‘One Ford’ strategy is behind the Mustang’s migration. To cut costs and reduce the number of models (and platforms) the firm makes globally, the all-new model will be a ‘world car’, sold in different markets virtually unchanged.

The Fiesta, Focus andMondeoalready follow this approach, and it means there is a business case for producing right-hand-drive Mustangs in the States and shipping them to Europe. But the UK won’t be the only right-hand-drive market the car is offered in; Australia and Japan will take the car, too.
An insider revealed:“The design studios in Europe and Australia are working on it, as well as those in America. It will be smaller and closer in spirit to the original 1964 Mustang.”

Our illustrations give you a good idea of how the new ‘pony’ car will look. It’s leaner and ever so slightly smaller, but still very mean, and packs all the visual aggression for which the legendary model has been famous. This includes recessed headlamps, a traditional C-pillar and triple lens tail-lights.

Yet while it harks back to Sixties Mustangs, the new car will be the most technically advanced version ever. It will be far lighter than the current model, for improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions.

Plus, for the first time, it’s set to feature independent rear suspension. As on the Chevrolet Camaro, this set-up replaces the decades-old live rear axle of the current car, and should mean better ride comfort and traction.

Power will come from a new 2.5-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost turbo with around 300bhp, while a range-topping 500bhp 5.4-litre V8 will be available, too. Six-speed manual and auto transmissions are likely to be offered with torque vectoring to keep the performance in check, while the handling is expected to be tuned by Jost Capito and his team at Ford’s Global Performance Vehicles arm.

As well as upping quality under the skin, Ford will have to pay attention to the materials used inside – current models fall behind their European rivals in terms of fit and finish. The move to make the Mustang a world car will be controversial.

Bosses will need to tread carefully so as not to alienate the model’s huge fan base – nearly 75,000 examples were sold in the US in 2010 – and still appeal to discerning UK buyers used to the BMW 3-Series CoupĂ© and Audi A5.

But with Vauxhall’s VXR8, and the Monaro before it, proving that there’s room for powerful muscle cars in the line-up of a mainstream maker, Ford will be confident of success

2013 Lotus Evora

Lotus’ decision to halt plans for the Elan because it looked too much like theEvora model is kind of funny considering the Evora will be undergoing some aesthetic changes for its next generation as part of the "Lotus New Era" outline. All told, the Evora is scheduled to receive no less than 150 changes compared to the current model so we figured it would be appropriate to take a stab at what it would look like.
Expected to debut sometime in 2013, the Lotus Evora is getting a makeover to boost the aggressive factor and make it a viable competitor for Ferrari models. Lotus’ ex-Ferrari design boss, Donato Coco thinks the current Evora’s front end is "too weak" adding, “Even many economy cars look more aggressive.” The new design will hearken back to the Lotus 18 single-seater seen at the beginning of the 1960s.
Lotus was struggling with slow sales of the current Evora and although there was a boost when the Evora S debuted, the company needed to act fast to keep the momentum going. Their "Lotus New Era" outline, as well as plans to build their own V6 and V8 engines, will hopefully keep things going int he right direction.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI breaks Isle of Man lap record

The Isle of Man’s 37.75-mile, 200-turn Mountain Race Circuit is one of those tracks that test a person’s endurance over a pretty long distance. It’s a little more than two-and-a-half times the length of the Nurburgring so you can expect it to be as daunting as any race track in the world, even for the standards of superbikes that race in the circuit every year.
That’s why we found it surprising to find out that a Subaru Impreza WRX STIbroke the lap record for a four-wheeled vehicle in the track after the record stood for 21 years.
Driven by former British Rally champion and WRC veteran Mark Higgins, the Impreza WRX STI clocked an impressive - by its standards – time of just under 20 minutes, with an average lap speed of 113 mph, breaking the previous lap record by more than two minutes. Late rally veteran Tony Pond set the previous record back in 1990 while driving a Rover 827 Vitesse.
The Subaru Impreza WRX STI was given a shot at breaking the record as part of a new agreement signed by Subaru of America to be the sponsor for the Isle of Man TT races while also becoming the official car of the yearly event.
Congratulations to both Subaru and Mark Higgins for the new record and here’s to hoping that we won’t have to wait 21 years for this record to be broken.

The Top Ten Muscle Cars of the 60s and 70s

The early 60s all the way up to the 70s was a golden age for the American automotive industry if only for the simple fact that muscle cars were growing not just in number, but in overall stature. The muscle car arms race of the that time yielded plenty of options for customers looking for more power and metal-twisting torque from these vehicles. And the models only grew in popularity as more and more people began clamoring for the biggest, baddest, and most powerful machines.
The general appeal these muscle cars offered to the growing American car culture of the time was the opportunity to own powerful cars that could be used for drag racing while also keeping costs at bay. At that time, a number of brands began developing their own models, including legendary names like theFord Mustang, the Chevrolet Camaro, the Plymouth Barracuda, the Pontiac Trans-Am, and the Dodge Charger, to name a few.
While the golden age of American muscle was limited to parts of these two decades, the industry has enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in recent years. It’s not going to compare to the 60s or the 70s, but as proven by customer clamoring, the culture of American muscle cars is far from bearing its last legs.
To pay tribute to the time where muscle was king of the road - and the drag strip - we have compiled a list of the 10 most memorable muscle cars of the golden age.

Can’t make it to the NBA Finals? Take home Udonis Haslem’s Dodge Challenger SRT-8 instead

The NBA Finals are HEATing up and every Miami fan is eagerly awaiting their opportunity to watch the action court-side. Of course, not many fans will have the chance to do so, but thanks to Udonis Haslem, power forward for the Miami Heat, one lucky fan will get the chance to take home a memorable keepsake. No, we’re not talking about a signed basketball or jersey, but Haslem’s very own black 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT-8. His personal Challenger is currently on sale on eBay for a reasonable $37,990.
Haslem’s Dodge Challenger is painted in all black with a full black leather interior. It sits on 24" alloy performance wheels with carbon fiber overlays which are then wrapped in Pirelli tires. Other features include remote start system, a dual rear exhaust with dual bright exhaust tips, an Anti-spin rear differential, a rear stabilizer bar, 4-wheel anti-lock performance disc brakes, and a performance tuned power rack & pinion steering. Under the hood is Dodge’s 6,059 cc HEMI V8 gasoline engine producing 425 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 420 lb-ft at 4800 rpm. It is mated to an Autostick automatic transmission.
